The Four Elements of Day of the Dead Altars

The altar includes four main elements of nature - earth, wind, water, and fire.

Earth is represented by crop: The Mexicans believe the souls are fed by the aroma of food.

Wind is represented by a moving object: Tissue paper is commonly used to represent wind.

Water is placed in a container for the soul to quench its thirst after the long journey to the altar.

Fire is represented by a wax candle: Each lit candle represents a soul, and an extra one is placed for the forgotten soul.

Pumpkin Carving Ritual

Time to start decorating! I love decorating for this day. You would, if you visited, find bats, Witches, skeletons, scarecrows, and ghosts peeking out of every pot, pan, bowl, closet, drawer, and bookshelf in the house. One of my favorite traditions at this time of year is to carve pumpkins. Sometimes I carve one large pumpkin. But more often, I will carve three smaller pumpkins, each with a different expression. Plenty of Halloween books, magazines, and articles offer ideas for carving methods and creative designs. I like to turn my carving into a ritual. I gather all my carving tools, my pumpkins, and my ritual tools. I cast a circle and ask angels of creativity for inspiration. Sometimes, I have designs worked out on paper ahead of time. Most often, I take the advice of sculptors: They let what is inside the stone or clay come out. In other words, I let the spirit of the pumpkin express itself. It’s not easy, as words are more natural to me than artwork. But it is always rewarding. The innards become pumpkin pies or pumpkin cookies. Some of the seeds are toasted, and some of the seeds are given as offerings to the spirit of pumpkin and to the angels. Every year’s pumpkins are different, because the spirit of each pumpkin is unique. Each pumpkin is a living being. The merry expressions lit by candlelight fill my home with joy and blessings.

Pumpkins

We picked these gorgeous pumpkins. I can't wait to carve them. I love using the carving patterns. Especially from this site!
After that I love to roast the pumpkin seeds too.

Pumpkin Seeds

Spray a cookie sheet with no-stick cooking spray and spread them evenly across the sheet. Very lightly spray the seeds before roasting.

Put them in the oven and bake at 300° for about 35 minutes, until they're a toasted, golden brown. Salt the seeds to your preference

Zombie Fingers

I love making these cookies, they are fairly easy too and make a ton. They do spread out a little bit, so experiment and make them skinnier to look more like fingers. They taste great too. I used roasted pumpkin seeds for the finger nails w/ the point facing up, they look real cool that way.

Honoring Ancestors

During this Samhain season , I want to make an effort to horor my ancestors. I just got an email from my aunt with my grandmothers stuffed cabbage recipe on it. I'm going to try and recreate it this week. I'm also setting out any old pictures I might have of my grandparents and other family members too.

Autumn is the season when the dark of the year arrives. It is a time to turn inward and reflect on our ancestors and on those we love who have crossed to the other side of the veil. Begin building energy to welcome your loved ones on Samhain by placing photos or mementos of them on a table, bookshelf, or windowsill in the east area of a room. (East is the direction associated with ancestors and family.) Along with ancestral photos, you may want to include goddess images of Hecate, Cerridwen, Kali, Inanna, or Cybele. Samhain is when the goddess enters her crone aspect as Dark Mother and Wise One. She takes away what she has created, but in her dark womb is the seed of the next New Year. All that is old is new again.

Magickal Pumpkin Bread

I can always get the boys to eat this and it sneaks in some veggies too. Throwing in a handful of butterscitch chips makes it that much better!

Magickal Pumpkin Bread
1-3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla (love & mental prowess)
(symbolizing fertility & money) 1/2 cup vegetable oil
1-1/2 cups sugar (love & passion)
2 large eggs (fertility)
3/4 teaspoon salt (protection) 1/3 cup water (cleansing)
1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup fresh pumpkin (abundance) 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (health & wishes)
(spirituality & protection ) Powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (luck & health) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all dry ingredients
(except walnuts and powdered sugar).
Mix well. In another bowl, combine pumpkin, water, eggs, vanilla and
oil.
Add dry ingredients to pumpkin mixture and beat thoroughly.
Stir in nuts and pour batter into a greased loaf pan.
Bake for 75-80 minutes.
Cool 15 minutes before removing from pan. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

These are great for magickal party favors and will cost you very little.

6 miniature pumpkins
6 tea lights
knife or pumpkin carving tools

Cut off the tops of the little pumpkins and clean them out Cut faces into the pumpkins. Insert tea lights. Hold your hands over the pumpkins and chant:

"Gold and silver
coins galore
all are coming
to your door."

Keep your hands over the pumpkins until your palms tingle or grow
warm. Give them to your friends with a smile, and repeat the spell
to them. Tell them to light the candle in the pumpkin at midnight
on Samhain to activate the spell.

Often, when we think of those who have passed on we are over-come with grief. This following spell for condolence can help ease the pain. On the stove top or in a potpourri burner, place three parts lemon balm, two parts lavender, one part sage, one-half part rosemary, and one-quarter part allspice. You may also add sweet peas, elder bark, fennel seed, or willow leaves if you have them. Allow the mixture to simmer while you visualize it sending a healing hug.

I'm going to work on doing some of these in preparation of Samhain and I'm going to try and share them with you as well! I'm going to start off by freshening up the place and clearing the air-

Clearing Your Home Spell

Samhain is almost upon us. The indoor season will soon follow. To prepare for this we should do a clearing, so that stagnant energies cannot build up during the dormant time of the year. Set up a tray with a censer containing sage incense, a bell, and a small bowl with blessed water containing basil. You will also need your besom. Walk through your home in a clockwise manner beginning at the front door and ending at the back. Enter the first room and waft the sage smoke everywhere. Dip your fingers in the water and sprinkle it about. Next, walk the room in a clockwise fashion ringing the bell. Take your besom and sweep any leftover energy to the door saying: “I sweep the bad out, and good remains throughout.”

Apple Picking Magick

We went apple picking and the weather was gorgeous. The sky was amazing. My sister and I went with all our kids. We nibbled along the way, picked raspberries, tons of apples and pumpkins too! We have the day off from school today, so I'm hoping to make some candy apples!

I went to one of my favorite sites for herbs and found this info on apples-

Apples may be incorporated into any ritual in which one wishes to give honor to a god or goddess of fertility. Dried seeds and bark may be powdered and burned as incense. Apples may be eaten, or the juice shared in the ritual cup when seeking knowledge through the Tree of Life, an act requesting wisdom from the deities. The Apple may also be used as a symbol of security. Apples are often associated with good luck. (If you cut an Apple in half horizontally and look where the seed cavity is you'll see it produces a five pointed star) The Apple is believed to improve one's spirits and elevate one's happiness.

Autumn Leaf Magick
In the fall, write a secret wish upon a fallen leaf. Choose a leaf with red colors for a wish pertaining to matters of love, sex, passion, or health. A gold-colored leaf for wishes involving money, a brown one for protection, a purple one for healing, an orange one for energy, a yellow one for confidence, attraction, or persuasion, a green one for fertility, success, or good luck.

Fold the leaf in half, or roll it up and seel it with a kiss. Using the flame of a white candle set the leaf on fire. As it burns, visualize your wish comming true for you.

Cinnamon Vanilla Mabon Alter candle &Cinnamon Scented spell Paper

Cinnamon Vanilla Mabon Alter candle
Items needed;
Large vanilla candle
Dozen or more cinnamon sticks
You will also need several yards of thin natural green vine, such as the remaining vines of morning glory, or moon flowers.

Strip the leaves from the thin vine; begin by soaking the cinnamon sticks in warm water for a few minutes. This softens them up and opens up the curled ends so you can easily slip the vines through them. Save the warm cinnamon water for our next project!
Start by lacing and weaving the vine in and out of the cinnamon stick opens to form a small fence of cinnamon sticks big enough to go around your candle.
Once the cinnamon sticks are large enough to fit around your candle, wrap around the vanilla candle, and tie off with a piece of natural jute.
The candle is a wonderful affordable addition to your a Mabon Alter.
As the candle burns you’ll get the added pleasure of a nice scent of vanilla cinnamon.

Cinnamon Scented spell Paper

Items needed:
Cinnamon water
Tea bags
Paper

Heat the remaining water, that you used to soak the cinnamon sticks in, place bowl in microwave for a couple seconds until very warm, add your favorite tea bag, and place pieces of paper into the bowl.

Allow the paper to soak for about 30 minutes or until desired tint is reached. Then remove and dry flat, it will have a wonderful cinnamon scent that last for months, and is perfect for your BOS, or spell writing needs.

Using the last of the harvest.
To use up the remaining herbs from your garden, try making herbal honey,
Simmer the honey until warmed, place herbs of lemon balm, lavender, or other combinations, in a sterile canning jar, cover with warm honey and allow to sit on your alter, for one full moon cycle. Strain the herbs, and enjoy a new flavored twist to teas and toast.
You can also reuse old wine bottles, to make any combination of herbal vinaigrettes.
Clean and remove labels, add combinations like garlic and rosemary, fill to the top with apple cider vinegar and cork remember not to use metal lids!
They taste great and look fabulous sitting on your alter.
As a general rule I leave them on my alter for one full moon cycle, after using just refill with vinegar to make more

Rosemary Lavender face scrub
1 cup of oats
1 tablespoon of each of the following herbs;
Rose petals
Lavender flowers
Rosemary

In your blender chop all ingredients, heat oven to lowest possible setting, then turn the oven off, spread the chopped dry ingredients onto a cookie sheet and heat for about 7-10 minutes,
Place into sterile jar with lid.
To use, add a pinch to the palm of your hand, add enough water to make a moist scrub, scrub face allow to remain on face for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Mabon, the fall equinox, is a time for balancing all things, finding balance between light and dark, male and female, and other things in your life. It’s a wonderful time to begin to adjust your energy levels with that of the mother earth, we are coming into a time of rest, and change is among us. That can take some adjusting of your personal energy level, during the summer months we find ourselves full of outside energy, spending much time walking the woods, gardening, and doing fun summer activities, we now need to focus on a more inner approach. This sometimes can mean spending more time working on self then others. More time spent in the kitchen, and crafting.
It’s also a wonderful time for a little wish magick; a simple little spell we like to do is;
The first fall leaf
Items needed;
A windy autumn day,
A wish for self or others
A marker or quill pen and ink
And a brightly colored fall leaf.

Find a colored leaf that matches your wish, for example; deep shades of red can be used for love magick, or sending love to someone far away, if your wish is for prosperity choose a golden color, to become more grounded and centered choose a brown shade. Use your imagination and see what the colors of leaves you find remind you of. When you have selected your leaf, take a quill pen and ink or an everyday marker, and write a simple wish on the leaf, or the person to which you wish to send love. Choose from the sample sayings or write your own, take your wish leaf outside, and check the wind direction you will want to stand where the leaf will be carried away from your home, repeat your saying and release the leaf high into the wind, don’t worry if the leaf only travels a short distance, the winds will pick up and carry your wish along with time.

Apple Salsa

2 medium red apples
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper
1 finely chopped jalapeno pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon olive oil
Core and dice Apples into 1/4 inch pieces.
Toss immediately with lime juice.
Stir in remaining ingredients. Chill 2 hours before serving over fish, chicken
Or turkey.
or for us vegetarians: use as a dip or on pita bread!

I was looking for a recipe to make sangria and added some fall fruit. I'm making it to sit for a few hours for our Labor Day Celebration. Mabon is coming though.....

Autumn Sangria

2 bottles sangria, like Yago
1/2 cup Brandy
1 orange, washed, sliced in rounds
1 lime, washed, sliced
1 lemon, washed, sliced
1 pear, washed, sliced
1 nectarine , chopped
ice
Pour all into a glass pitcher and let sit 3-4 hours in the refridgerator
You can add a little diet sprite or seltzer also.

Changes~ autumn is near
Long before the leaves change to their beautiful shades of golden browns, orange and wine colors; nature has a way of showing us change is near. The butterflies that flock into the fields here are all beautiful shades of fall colors, yellows, browns and orange fluttering along on the wind. Spiral dances of love, you can sit and watch pairs of monarch butterflies painted with beautiful fall colors, spinning higher and higher in the air, in an amazing spiral dance. It’s such an amazing feeling to walk into the middle of the alfalfa fields , and be joined by hundreds of spiraling butterflies, I love to spin and turn and join them in their spiral dance of love. The last of the fall flowers are blooming marigolds and mums, in all shades, the last of the wild flowers in the field even sport their beautiful fall paint. The morning and evening air is turning cooler and darkness falls upon us earlier and earlier, but in the afternoon’s we are still blessed with the heat of the day, and can enjoy what I call the Missouri Indian summer. This is just the beginning of the changes the Mother Earth goes through, the last of her wonderful birth of growth,
with the fall harvest of her bounties upon us. Late October for us, is the heart of autumn, with Indian corn, pumpkins and gourds, and many things people truly symbolize as fall changes. The change of the seasons is much like the changes in our own life, when one learns to see the beauty in the smallest changes, the shades of color, the hint of things to come, things become more in tune. Balance and harmony falls into place, and we truly become one with the Earth Mother. We sometimes miss those little changes, those little hints of newly formed colors, that are happening in our own life, and before we know it change is upon us, leaving us with a feeling of where’d that come from. All changes happen for a reason, or a season I was once told, and this has become my own truth, I now watch for the slightest hint of color, the tiny change in the cricket’s song, the thickness of animal’s fur, and I find such beauty in it all. Embracing all life has to offer, from the smallest changes to the large full blown new paint job the Earth creates this time of year. We are now entering a time of inner silence, inner reflections, and a time for closeness of family and friends, a time of listening.
For me on a personal level, this is my time of giving thanks, “the Witch’s Thanksgiving.” I prepare myself and family for the coldness of winter, by stocking up on things, making sure our needs are met and we’ll have plenty to make it through another cold winters sleep. There was a time when this time of year was filled with sadness for the winter approaching, but as I grow older with age, I have learned to welcome change, in all forms, colors and shapes. I no longer allow the mourning of things passing, to fill my days, I live in the beauty for this very moment in time, I give thanks for all this past year has given me, the happy moments, the sadness and sorrow, lessons and my own spiritual growth. I can see how my own life cycles have become in balance with the Earth Mother, and I accept each new cycle with excitement and love for the beauty that surrounds. Long before the change arrives, take a look around your own life and home, learn to see the early signs of change, in the tiny thoughts that drift through your mind, the smallest of things that catch your eye, learn to honor those changes, and fill your life with magick and love.

Fall Faerie Blessings and seed Harvest
Items needed:
8 inch circle of fall colored material
8 inch circle of fall colored tissue paper
Fall colored ribbon or yarn
Fall colored marker or pen
And the following;
Rosehips
Marigolds
Mugwart
Pine needles
1 acorn
First fall leaf you see
1 bay leaf
3 sage leaves

Lay out the fall colored tissue paper,
On the bay leaf write a secret wish with the fall colored marker or pen
Lay this in the center of the tissue paper circle,
Then on top add the other items,
Take a fall colored ribbon or yarn,
Tie around the tissue paper circle to create a blessing bundle.
Tie three knots around the bundle and say:
By knot of one this spell has begun
By knot of two, let it be true
By knot of three, I offer you thee

On 8 inch material circle, cut small holes all the way around the circle,
Then lace your fall colored ribbon in and out to create a small bag.
Place the tissue paper blessing bundle into the bag,
And go for a nice walk in the woods, or your yard.

When you find the perfect spot
Where faeries come to play,
Take out the blessing bundle,
And say the following;

Fairies if you please
Bless me with some seeds
In return I offer you these

Place your bundle in the secret spot,
And continue on your walk, looking for fall seeds,
Look for dried seed pods on wild flowers, or other types of plants,
When you find some seeds place them in your cloth bag,
After your walk and seed gathering tie the bag shut with seven knots.
One for each of the fall and winter months,
Place the bag on your alter, and save until spring.
In the spring open the bag, and plant the seeds and
your wish will come true.

Safe travel charm bag

Creating a charm bag: you can search the web and books, but the magick of a creating a charm bag is selecting personal items, those things that hold great value and meaning to you on a person level. Taking this first step of tapping into your own creativity puts the magick in motion. I like to begin by gathering more supplies then I really need. I’ll lay out a handful of stones & herbs, and then focus on the intentions of the bag. I will then select only those items that speak to me, even if I don’t find them listed on some correspondent list some where else.

For the safe travel bag, I selected the following items:
Blue flannel material; from my daughter’s trip to Ks.
Hematite, turquoise, tiger’s eye; also a gift from my daughter’s trip
A bear charm, as well as a squirrel eating a acorn charm; both gifts from carol, the bear for strength and protection, and the squirrel for keeping animals safe while I drive.
A dried zinnia flower that I planted at the roadside memorial, for emotional strength & protection
Broken glass from my son’s car, protection from my son as well a reminder to drive safe!
A shiny dime that I found { I believe my those are gifts from my son}
Herbs; patchouli, chamomile & lavender for calmness while driving, horehound to keep from getting tickets, sage & black art incense for protection, blessing send incense to bless my old car , and juniper berries from a dear friend I lost a few yrs back.
A power hematite necklace from my daughter-n-law.

I placed the herbs in my mortar & pestle, and grind them together blending their energy with my own and those ancestors who protect me.

I then place the stones in the bag, along with the herbs then tied the bag shut, I put the small charms on the string to the power stone necklace, and then secure it around the bag, leaving enough length of string to hang from my car.

The safe travel bag, gathers strength from the sun, and fills my car with the earthly scent of the herbs and incense, and reminds me when I open the door and get in, that I am protected and aware of my driving, reminding me to always pay attention and drive safe!

Magick Peanut Butter Cookies

These cookies are magick for more than one reason. They are the simplest cookies ever, they don't even have flour in them.

Peanut Butter Cookie-
1 C peanut butter
1 C sugar
1 egg
1/4 tsp vanilla.

Mix together, place on cookie sheet how ever big you want. Dip tines of fork in sugar and press down, they don't really spread so well on their own. Bake 350 for 8- 10 minutes.

The book Magick Made Easy says that peanut butter is good for binding magick, makes sense! It also says if you want to change a habit to carve a symbol in your cookie before baking, then eat. I love that idea. Check out the book in google books, I linked it for ya! Lots of goodies to look up!

I'm going to try this fun and simple spell I just found. It's not my favorite wild flower but it is so abundant right now. When I was growing up, my aunt was so allergic to it, we weren't allowed to touch it! I'm glad to find this spell and will be harvesting some today, It's right at the back of my yard.

A little bit of morning magick...

I planted zinna's by the side of the road,

at my son's memorial, never really knowing their meaning, I just wanted something to be pretty and outlast the summer heat. I've been stopping in the mornings after taking my hubby to work, and watching them bloom for weeks....

this morning I decided to pick a few and bring them home! I am so glad these tiny little bunch of flowers started my monday off right, I'm usually feeling a little down after stopping there, but today I felt ok, ready to start my week ahead... of course as I drove the words to another poem filled my head.. but I came home and looked up the meaning & magick of Zinna's without really knowing, I planted my own little bit of healing magick..

These flowers are growing like crazy all along the road side here in upstate-ish NY. I always loved chicory, it's one of my favorite colors ever. I always read about it being a coffee substitute but never went that far. I think i'll collect some to store for magickal uses for now

Chicory is a good herb to use when one is seeking to remove negativity and obstacles in the energy flow. Full Moon Meatballs

I'm making up a big batch of meatballs in the crock pot, I'm hoping to freeze some and get a
few meals out of it, so I doubled the recipe below. I found this in Cooking Light magazine
quiet a few years ago and it's always been a huge hit with everyone.


Beef Meatballs
from Cooking Light


Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds ground round- grounding, properity
1/4 cup (1 ounce) finely shredded fresh Parmesan cheese- joy
1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs
1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley- cleansing
1/4 cup tomato sauce-health money
1 teaspoon dry mustard- personal growth
3/4 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning- love, cleansing, prosperity, harmony
1/4 teaspoon salt- protection
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper- strength
2 garlic cloves, crushed ( I like to use powder the kids can't detect it
so easy)- passion
Cooking spray


Preparation

Preheat oven to 400°.

Combine all ingredients except cooking spray in a bowl; stir well. Shape
mixture into 30 (1 1/2-inch) meatballs. Place on a broiler pan coated
with cooking spray. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until done.

I cook in my favorite jarred sauce in the crockpot until I'm ready and serve
over pasta

Two of my favorite wild plants. The Daisy and Mullein. The mullein is hug this year. Daisies are always so happy and inviting. I'd love a yard ful of them!

Mullein is an herb of protection and purification that has a strong association with elemental Fire. (Thus its old name "Torches") Some practitioners dip the leaves in a liquid mixture of saltpeter and water, then hang them to dry. When tossed into a fire these blaze quite brightly. The entire flower stalk may be harvested and dried, and if this is done when its at the end of its cycle the head can be soaked in a tallow mixture so it may be carried as a burning torch. Such torches are perfect for Hallow's Eve. Wear Mullein to instill courage, or carry it in sachets for protection. Cunningham states the powdered leaves are known as "graveyard dust" and are acceptable to use when such is called for in old recipes.

Daisies are an herb of protection and their Invocatory is Freya. Modern practices include the growing of Daisies as an herb to further attract the Devas and the Fae. Grieve's "A Modern Herbal" suggests there may be an association between Daisies and a Dryad (a woodland nymph) named Belidis. Dryads are often associated with elemental Earth, and Daisies may be used ritually to help one commune with this element. Decorate your temple or home with Daisies for Midsummer's Eve. There is also a Magickal association with babies and newborn infants. The Daisy may be incorporated into baby blessings and Wiccanings, or used to bring protective Magick into the baby's sleeping area.

Cantelope Milk Shakes

My grandmother always made cantaloupe milk shakes when we were growing up. They are so yummy! She just threw some peeled/seeded cantaloupe and ice cream in the blender. It had to be Breyers natural vanilla bean fleck though. They were soooo good! They are $1- at Walmart this week! Can't beat that! ;)
My sister always soaks cubes of cataloupe in Sambouca. That is so good too, ice cold. Serve with toothpicks.

Well, the pictures didn't come out like I had hoped. These 3 are one window sill in my kitchen. I collect this old colored glass and when the sun shines in, it's gorgeous. Unfortunately, we don't see a lot of sunshine, these days! (Expecting 4 more inches of rain today!) Some of the glass came from mom , some from yard sales and a couple pieces Mori found for me! I love them. By accident, I started to put all my found nature-y type things here and it just made sense to become the alter. I have the sea shells I found in some containers, tiny mermaids, robin's eggs, my corn dolly and fairy house. Crystals the kids made and forgive the ripening tomatoes... but I guess that works for Lammas too!

Finding Faeries

Finding faeries, while faeries abide everywhere in nature. Some places are just more magickal then others, some places are more faerie freindly,there are those hidden out of the way places that faeries are just drawn to. I believe the deep hidden creek banks behind our land to be one of those very magickal places. Even within the bounderies of these creeks, some places are more magickal feeling then others, I am drawn to one tree more then another, or one area more then another.

as I walk along, I follow that inner feeling of magick, and listen to the chatter on the wind, sometimes I will notice tiny sparkles catching my eye, dancing in the shadows. I love photograhing these areas, the area of the base of huge trees, I can image tiny faeries villages all around. I can feel the faerie folk there. I know they have amazing homes in the base of these trees. With their twisted gnarly root system, and huge plants growing all around. It creates the perfect enivornment to keep the fey safe and happy!

I call this place my private little Faerie Hallow, even though I have a faerie garden in my own yard, I also leave tiny blessings here, and I go here for guidance and fey meditations, and some times just to visit, and renew my "knowing" they are all around!

Fairy House

I made this little fairy house at the beginning of the summer. It was a lot of fun. I used a small bird house from the dollar store and covered it with bark and pine cone pieces, sticks and a sea shell. It was fun and looks real sweet! I still would like to make a second using white birch. I keep this on my window alter for the house fae to use. I'm not sure that it would hold up in the weather outdoors. Also, I noticed 2 more fairy rings outside! I just figured I'd do a little house blessing for it!

Tiny Treasures

Just a glimse of this amazing blue butterfly set my heart sailing into the summer wind, I love it when I'm walking along and something catches my eye, it makes me pause, and enjoy the magickal energy of the nature around me.

This is just a tiny treasure that my hubby found for me on our evening walk, I took it home and added it to my faerie garden, as a blessing and offering of thanks to the fey, for blessing me with such beauty around me'

I find that magick is not so far away, hidden in some locked up vault that we have to tap our way into.. true magick is in the everyday living & loving of our world around us, blending our energy with that of nature, to create just what we need & want from life.

Another treasure from our walk was the sght of this wasp! I had to come home and look up what excatly I had taken a picture of! I had never seen such a thing, its acutally a Megarhyssa atrata ovipositing, now those are some big words, so I had to again look them up, so after some time I figure out I took a picture of a gaint wasp laying eggs, or something close to that anyway.

After my husband got stung, in the eye by a wasp this week-end and then turned around later that day to get stung again in the finger, and then our strange sighting, I figured wasp was trying to tell him something:

Animal Symbolism of the Wasp

Lammas Suet Cakes

I was wondering what I'd like to do for Lammas this year, I am just not ready to welcome fall, and I'm really enjoying this summer weather! its so amazingly cool for July. So I decided to make a little treat for the birds to enjoy later on this winter.

Lammas Suet cakes

Ingredients:
slightly melted peanut butter
a splash of olive oil
crush cheerios, soy nuts, dried cranberries, and a small amount of crushed egg shells.
mix together,
fill tiny muffin tins, and place in freezer until ready to use.
The birds love them in the midst of the cold winter months,
I also have some left overly well done apples, I think I will slice them and hang up to dry as well.

Today's walk

We took a walk tonight, just a 1/2 mile down the road. It's steamy out there and rains on and off. I'm feeling like I live in a tropical rain forest these days! When we got to this pond or quarry, I'm not really sure what it is, we could hear the frogs talking and then hear all the ker-plunks as they jumped in to get away from us. The reeds and cattails were so pretty in the heavy air. The rest of the area is rocky. Along the way we passed by some puddles that were filled with tadpoles. So I thought I'd take a look at their totem meaning.

Tadpole-Fertility and Renewal, Transformation
Frog-Fluidity, Water and Rain, Cleansing and Tears

Frog's song calls down the cleansing power of the rain. Frog is a reminder of the sacred power of tears to transform and cleanse away sorrow. Frogs will die if away from moisture for too long, and thus Frog reminds us to refresh ourselves, and allow joy to moisten our lives and our hearts. If you are feeling "muddied" by the world, take a moment to dream, to laugh and cry and renew yourself.
It is imperative to learn how to recognize when people, situations and circumstances are draining energy, and to cleanse them out of your aura so that you may sing freely.

Corn Dolly for Lammas

I saved my corn husks and made a corn dolly. It was fun! I tied her with green ribbons from Mori with thoughts of prosperity going through my head! She is now sitting in my window sill alter drying and will be picking up the rays of the moon as it grows into full.

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. Being born a down home kansas girl, I love sunflowers. They remind me of home, and of my dad.... But more and More they are growing in huge fields here in Missouri. I love the sight of them covering fields all the way to the horizon! dancing in the wind with their faces all aglow!

Its also a welcomed sight to see the bee's that still swarm to the bright yellow blooms.

I realized that I had taken a lot of pictures of rocks lately, they have been jumping out at me. I got thinking of those long skinny stones from the other day and I really wanted to find a meaning. I wasn't looking for phallic to be that meaning though .....but I found this list of stone shape meanings. I have a little bit of everything here.

Stone Shapes-

Holey Stones
Stones with natural ( caused by the elements not man) holes are
considered extremely magical. Protective in nature they are a

Three Sisters

While I was walking on the Hudson the other day, I saw many sculptures had been added all over. This was one of them titled Three Sisters. I'm not sure of the artist. It is made of beautiful bark pots. One pot is filled with corn, one with beans and the other with squash.

It was said that the earth began when “Sky Woman” who lived in the upper world peered through a hole in the sky and fell through to an endless sea. The animals saw her coming, so they took the soil from the bottom of the sea and spread it onto the back of a giant turtle to provide a safe place for her to land. This “Turtle Island” is now what we call North America.

Sky woman had become pregnant before she fell. When she landed, she gave birth to a daughter. When the daughter grew into a young woman, she also became pregnant (by the West wind). She died while giving birth to twin boys. Sky Woman buried her daughter in the “new earth.” From her grave grew three sacred plants—corn, beans, and squash. These plants provided food for her sons, and later, for all of humanity. These special gifts ensured the survival of the Iroquois people.

I chose this story because the Iroquois are from NY but another legend is also here.

It fills the air while driving down the dusty country roads near where I live, I just love the sweet clean smell of honeysuckle. The sight of the flowers in bloom, remind me of faeries dancing on wild untamed vines. The magickal side of honeysuckle:

A Walk on the Hudson

Yesterday we took a nice walk at a park on the Hudson River. We had a picnic too! I'm always gathering and collecting while we walk. I guess I need to keep busy!

I found these water chestnuts. I've always collected those since I was little, but called them cow heads. They kinda look like a bull with horns.
I found you can use these as protection if you put them over your doorway. It would be pretty bad if it fell off and you stepped on it though! They are cool to collect and look at. I guess they are bad news though as they are very invasive!

I gathered these rocks too. I loved the long skinny shape of them and brought a bunch home. I wonder what different rock shapes mean. There was a bunch in this shape, too. I wonder how they got this way. I had to take a handful. There used to be brick yards here, so there's lots of bits and pieces of stone and brick scattered about the edge of the river.

Bats

The other day I was trying to sit outside and enjoy the weather, since it was finally not raining!
I was doing some reading and lasted about 5 minutes. The mosquitoes were just too much for me. Then a sad thought occurred. It's been quite awhile since I've seen many bats. There used to be so many outside I would almost have to duck! It seems the bat situation is worsening.

I have found some plastic bats the boys had and hung them in my special wish tree along with my bells from Mori, my favorite chimes and ribbons from past spells and sabbats. I'm wishing for the bats to come back and sending them out a blessing.

Mori`s Faerie garden update

I started this spring with an idea, and a memorial spot for my son, his picture has been moved to the side of the road, the sight of his death, but in its place, magick has grown! today I added the tiny faerie clothes line, and tiny natural faerie hut, as well the hanging natural basket, I thought it would make the perfect faerie nursery!
to the back you can see my low level watering hole, made from a old no longer needed satelite dish! painted and filled with shells

this was an old iron photo frame, one of this week-ends garage sale finds! I took green hemp string and filled the back where the picture goes with a spiderweb creating a faerie gateway! added some little rag ribbons and there's my new faerie bench for the edge of the garden!

This shows just how much the garden has grown under my sacred tree!, I'm collecting things as I go along, rocks here and there that I find, lots of goodies to many to speak of of, hidden in every nook and cranny!

Lavender Rose Geranium Sugar Scrub

On one of my walks I found a bunch of wild roses. I left them in this beautiful bowl I received from Mori to dry. Next I threw a bunch of things together-

My recipe-

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 tsp. vitamin E
8 drops rose geranium essential oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
A big pinch of dried roses
A big pinch of dried lavender (from Mori's garden)

Instructions:
Combine sugar and oil, add vitamin e, e.o's and herbs.

Mix up. Keep in jar.

Sugar is good for really dry spots. I have actually been using this on my heels, hands and elbows. My heels are so dry from flip flop weather and I think this helps. Also, the rose geranium is supposed to keep ticks away, which is why I bought the stuff. We have so many ticks around here and Lyme's Disease is really getting out of hand. Maybe this might help to keep those nasty things off my ankles!

Indian Pipe

We took a short walk on Friday to one of our favorite swimming holes. It was a little on the too cold side, but it was a nice break. On the way back up the trail. I noticed Indian Pipe growing. I always thought this was so cool! I always thought it was a fungus too, but it is actually a flower. It is known by so many names that I had a difficult time finding much magickal information on it. I found the most info by one of it's names- elecampane here ( The site is difficult to read though) and here.
You can read it below-

Elecampane is magickally used for banishing and to dispel angry or violent vibrations. Associated with elves. Use in a sachet to attract love or in incense to purify initiates. Strong association with the Elven world and Tarot. Useful for baby blessings. Hide a sachet of elecampane or sprinkle it around doorways to keep out bad vibrations. Ground together with vervain and mistletoe for a powerful love powder.

Worn, elecampane attracts love- Sew up some of the leaves or flowers in pink cloth, or make a sachet. It is also carried for protection, and the herb smoldered on charcoal aids in sharpening psychic powers, particularly when scrying.

I also found out the flower is associated with elves, fairies and nature spirits, it can be used in garden and fairy magick. Which I love knowing

As you would guess there is also a Cherokee legend that goes along with the plant. It says where ever you see a grouping, there has been an argument in the past and the indian pipes are to remind us to live in peace.

My favorite names this plant also goes by are- Fairy smoke, elfwort, and Ghosts of summer's woods

Last night's Walk

I've always believed that, part of really being a witch is getting out and about, and enjoying nature. One can only read so many books, or websites, but the real learning comes from living, living the life of a witch. By experience! Nature alone is a wonderful teacher, listen to her gentle messages, and she will fill your heart with faith that magick is all around.

Last night along with the joy of watching the great blue heron fish, I also took the time to walk, I found so many treasures, I find it amazing that even though we are hundreds of miles apart, my walk was filled with many of the same treasures as carol's. The sight of cattails, and blackberries, along with fields full of bee balm all a bloom. One of my favorite things of this time of year is the brightly colored black eyed susan!

magickally speaking the black eyed susan is connected to the Sun, and powers of protection!

there are also many legends that go with the wildflowers

The Legend of Black-eyed Susan and Sweet William(Rudbeckia hirta and Dianthus barbatus) These two much-loved wildflowers have a romantic legend in common, told in an old English poem by John Gay: “All in the downs the fleet was moored, banners waving in the wind. When Black-eyed Susan came aboard, and eyed the burly men. ‘Tell me ye sailors, tell me true, if my Sweet William sails with you.’” This search for Sweet William is one of the all-time favorite wildflower legends, and good gardeners always note that these two species are both biennials, bloom at exactly the same time, and look lovely together.

The heron

Last night we went to the lake for my husband to do some fishing, and for me to spend some quiet time, watching nature. I spied a great blue heron, fishing along side the bank. it was amazing! I took a ton of pictures, and he allowed me to get really close without a worry in the world as he went about his evening meal.

I always take those precious moments in life, ans signs and messages.

so I look up some heron information.

I found the following:

Heron

The heron is part of the family of birds known as "waders". They live and feed in marshlands and in shallow waters, and are often confused with cranes and storks. The heron carries a strong message, and it takes a very special person to live with heron medicine.

A Magickal Correspondences Walk

Last night I went on a walk down the road and brought my camera along. We walked about a mile to an old quarry. Hidden behind some dirt mounds was a beautiful pond and loads of wild flowers. Today I researched and identified the flowers I saw, then looked up their magickal qualities. It was so interesting! It took some time identifying, but well worth it. I will now go back and gather some. Do you want any? Or should it be like that divination hike....

Toadflax- protection and breaking hexes

Thistle- joy and energy. Leave throughout the room for cleansing

Blackberry- money and protection. Hiding place of the fae

Herb Robert- part of the geranium family. This one I will research more, because it seems so interesting. It's even planted in the "magic" garden section of the medieval gardens of The Cloisters. It's good for love, protection and increases the power of other herbs. It's also known as Dragon Blood red.

Cattail- Lust..... hhhmmmm

Pine- prosperity. Burn for strength and to rid negative energies. The scent will alleviate guilt. Guess what I'm doing tonight:) Isn't this tree gorgeous, it's so soft and almost furry looking. They all were.

Rough Fruited Cinquefoil- eases heart ache and grief. Money, protection, wisdom

Blueberry-protection. This was a very nice find. We munched along the road all the way there!

Fern Leaf fennel

I love this crazy herb, this year it has grown as wild and free as it pleases, almost taller then me, this is one of the herbs my husband doesn't really like, he says it looks like weeds are taking over, but me.. That’s another story, I love that it grows all along my south side of the trailer. Most years the leaves get striped bare from so many caterpillars, but those caterpillars turn into beautiful amazing blue swallow tail butterflies!
among its natural wildness and beauty it also holds magickal powers of protection!

MAGICAL USES:
it is said that if you grow fennel around the house, fennel confers protection. You can also hang fennel up at windows and doorways to ward off evil spirits, and repel negative energy. It can also be carried as a protection herb, and used in purifications sachets, and well as healing mixtures.

Ok I'll admit it, I'm a garage sale / thrift store junky! and my favorite part of garage sales in looking under and around the tables for boxes just marked FREE! I always take them no matter what is in them, I've stocked a toy box for my grandkids this way, as well as found some amazing treasures, this week-end I found one of those tiny treasure, a tiny sign for my faerie garden, just the right size!

Jewelweed

Since we are covered in bug bites and the poison ivy is coming and going, I'm going to whip up some jewel weed potions! This stuff is the best for itches and stings. I thought it was called jewelweed for the flowers. I'm just finding it's name comes from the way the water beads up on the leaves after it rains. It's like the plant doesn't get wet, the droplets form "jewels". The seed pods are one of the most fun things to play ever. You touch them and they explode! I love that. That's where the other name of the plant comes from- Touch me nots.
It's great on poison ivy and if you look at my picture, you'll see how they are usually found next to each other( and notice the daddy long legs, too). We have loads growing in the back yard and I'm going to grab some! My plan is to infuse some in cider vinegar, or maybe I'll do it quicker and boil it, whip it up in the blender, then strain. I'm going to keep some in the fridge to keep it cool and soothing and use it for dabbing and put some in ice cube trays for really bad itches! It's also the best thing I have found for immediate soothing of stinging nettles. I have boiled it in oil and made a salve by straining and adding beeswax, in the past too. One more recipe I just discovered and find interesting is lotion.

Jewel Weed Lotion Infusion Potion-
Boil 1/2 cup of jewelweed in 1 cup water. Strain after about 10 minutes and add to any lotion, as much as will work in. This may only last a couple weeks, unless you add a preservative. Sometimes, I add a vitamin E tablet to preserve.

I'm back from beautiful magical places. Assateague Island was gorgeous. We saw wild horses and never ending ocean. We also saw sun burn, 95 degrees and waaay way too many mosquitoes. (Still recovering from that one. ) I'm so glad we went and I'm so glad to be home. It's great to be back to the daily thunderstorms!
We spent too much money going out to eat and I love that we did! Memories are worth all the money in the world. The boardwalk path you see to the left leads to our campground. The scenery was amazing and my son even caught a crab! I do wish we spent more time doing that! It could have been fun to eat them up!

Unseen Blessings Of the faerie kind
This morning was my turn to leave the faerie blessing, after a month long celebration!
Well not a day has gone by that I did not sit in my little faerie garden, and listen to the silence and nature around me. Each day I have added trinkets and treasures, a rock or stone here, a figurine, or sea shell, a candle burnt in the night, or a sprinkle of glitter to add some delight. As I sat and wondered what I might leave today, I realized that just my presence was a gift to them, as they are a gift to me. Sights and sounds maybe unheard, but a knowing they are near, perhaps they too know I am here. I listened and watched as a bird sang a silly song, and hopped and danced on the wire near by, I listened to the gentle wind make the tree squeak in tune, the rustle of the leaves, and even the tall grasses joined in. I could hear it all, on this early morning dawn. I noticed every little sight and sound, each dew drop caught on the spider’s web, each new baby toad learning to explore the world around the faerie garden. I was wondering what I loved most, and I just could not decide because each one held its own beauty, its on song and magick, and together they created a whimsical habitat for me to enjoy. A blessing yes in did, today I really felt small compared to it all, but so honored to be a part of it, and knowing we coincide together, each with our own little jobs, our own magickal power, and protection. Blessings unseen, of the faerie kind, healing a mother’s wounded mourning heart, with just a tiny sprout, or whisper on the wind unseen by the eye, but heard heavy with the heart. A month is too short, to celebrate the faerie folk and all they do for us, I’ve decided it’s a path I should follow, to the end of the days, and through each and every season. I wondered what my faerie garden might look like all covered in snow. With its own natural sparkle from each tiny snowflake that has fallen to the ground. I’ve decided to honor them all, each changing season ; faeries from the earth, the air, the water and fire,

even from the stars above!

This is a sweet poem I found. I read an article that said the woman who wrote this had Alzheimers. She was found shredding her poems and this is one of the 17 that were saved. I just felt I had to share that part of the story.

I woke to a fairy ring in the back yard Look who came to visit! I have a strange feeling my little friend traveled with the fairies from Missouri. It's kinda strange that the toad moved out from Mori's toad house and now here he is playing inside a fairy ring at my house the very next day!
I guess Mr. Toad looks a little blurry, oh well :(

I don't collect many things, but two of my loves are old glass in different shapes and sea shells. I love the vintage glass that can only be found at yard sales. I love this flower shaped plate and tiny tea cup. They always make me think fairy! Also, thinking of water fairies, I wanted to try and find a way to display many of the shells I collected from the Gulf of Mexico. I placed them all in this tall vase and I love how it turned out. My favorite shell is on the tiny tea cup. I've never seen one before. It's gorgeous! I wanted to share this little alter/display area.

Life is good! today we have the most amazing rolling thunder and much cooler weather! I walked outside to enjoy the sights and sounds of a good old fashion summer storm roll in, when I noticed my yard was covered in tiny mushroom, not the huge white cap toadstool types but tiny little mushrooms, so I went in the house to grab my camera, and what do I spy, a tiny tree frog on my kitchen cabinets, now years ago I had one stay the whole summer in my bathroom, I love them so! but my cats spied him as well, so I snatched him up, and thought I'll take him outside to safety!

So I placed him in my faerie garden, and he looked just as happy as could be!the happenings of The morning, remind me that I do indeed live in an enchanted world, if only I slow down and take the time to see!

Summer Solstice Blessings!

Being a Midwestern country witch, nothing says summer solstice like orange tiger lilies& black eyed Susan's, as well as the amazing beauty of queen Ann's lace.. for my fairy blessing, I picked a few of each, and cut them down to fairy size, placed them in a nice antique red bottle... and placed the queen Ann's lace on the opening to the doorway to the Fae. I'm so excited to see how my fairy garden is growing, I even have this amazing toad who moved right into my toad house, its the first time ever I've had a toad move in, so thats exciting and magickal to me. I've moved my fairy garden to under my favorite sacred tree, and this simple act was healing for me. it feels so much more magickal and at home there. every day I go there to sit and read, or enjoy the summer winds, and each day I bring a small token, to thank the area for its peace and healing. even if its just a tiny object to hang on a branch or a new rock, or a bit of glitter... the minute I enter that area, I am enchanted by the faeries, and I feel magick all around me.

It's so rainy here, it's really hard to get outside and frolic with the fairies. I'm trying to do little things, but outdoors is just mud and muck! So, I'm thinking I need to find a way to make the water sprites a little more happy and maybe they will give us a break. This picture is of the reservoir across the street from me. I drove over here, because you really aren't supposed to be walking around the water supply so much. It's always a peaceful drive over to the other side. I found this little way to honor the sprites that I saved and this is what I did-

Honor the deities of the sea by tossing bread crumbs into any natural body of water at dawn or sunset. Their blessing will be returned to you threefold.

A Flower Fairy Candle Spell

These wild columbine are growing all over the forests here. I just love them. The fairies have to love them too, they are filled with a sweet nectar, we used to nibble when we were young. I think they are little flower fairies in disguise. I have found a candle spell that I'll be doing for the fire fairies. I'm pretty exciting to be working with the fire fairies. It has made my imagination work a little harder. This spell is taken from Spell a day.

Faerie garden wand

I decided after all the high winds and storms, that the Air faeries must have arrived, to aplease them I decided to make something light & Airy, and add a bit of color to the garden as well....

I used a simple fairy wing pattern only much much smaller, added a little bit of this, a little of this color ribbon and that and few butterflies.. and suddenly there it was my very own garden fairy wand.

I decided once a week I would do some fun fairy cooking. Last night I made Italian Ricotta cookies. They look perfect for any fairy and just as delicious! They have a hint of lemon and taste kinda creamy cake like. They are my son's favorite and remind me of the ones you can find in Little Italy. So, we'll be loving these for awhile since they make quite a few. I'm sure the fae will love having a few too. Maybe I'll leave some to the Monaci della Montagna, little men in the Italian caves.

ITALIAN RICOTTA COOKIES

1/2 lb. butter
2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 lb. Ricotta
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
4 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream butter; add sugar and continue creaming. Add egg and Ricotta and vanilla; beat well. Sift together flour, baking powder and baking soda, salt; add to batter.

Drop about a teaspoon of dough on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degree oven about 10 minutes until edges are lightly browned. Cool.

FROSTING:

2 c. confectionery sugar
1/4 c. butter
3 tbsp. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. lemon juice

Mix well, dip each cooled cookie into frosting and sprinkle with sprinkles.
